McDonald's has taken down a holiday advertisement created using Artificial Intelligence following facing significant public disapproval.

The 45-second film was developed via AI video tools and was originally published online for McDonald's Netherlands on 6 December.

Viewer Response and Decision to Pull

Following its publication, commenters lambasted the use of AI in the advert. A number of labeled it "uncanny" and "poorly edited".

"This moment serves as an key learning as we investigate the appropriate utilization of Artificial Intelligence," said a representative from McDonald's Netherlands.

The commercial was created for the brand by Dutch agency TBWA\Neboko and American production company The Sweetshop. It showed a series of things that often go badly during the Christmas break, under the slogan "the worst time of the year".

The Phenomenon of AI in Advertising

Campaigns that include AI tools have emerged as a rising trend among major companies, particularly for the holiday season.

  • Coca-Cola has also released back-to-back AI-generated holiday commercials.
  • Inherent Limitations: Since segments created with generative AI are more likely to become unstable the longer they run, most AI video outputs tend to be roughly short in length.
  • Broader Implications: The video also sparked fears about automation in the production sector, with some observers noting it might reduce opportunities for production staff.

Defense from the Creators

Following the ad being taken down, The Sweetshop's CEO, Melanie Bridge, defended the advert.

She stated, the development took "seven weeks" and involved producing "thousands of takes" which were then edited in post-production "just as we would on any standard production".

"This wasn't just an experiment," she said. "We consider it a proper commercial."

Divisive Audience Sentiment

While the Dutch McDonald's ad was predominantly panned, the response for other AI-generated holiday ads has been more mixed.

For instance, a consecutive AI-generated holiday ad from Coca-Cola according to analysis achieved a 61% "positive sentiment rating" from the public.

However, various brands have likewise faced criticism for employing AI in marketing. Italian brand Valentino, for example, was lambasted for advertisements that some called "low-effort" and "uncanny".

The incident underscores the ongoing debate within the advertising and production industries about the balance between technological innovation and audience reception.
