The Film 'Together' Can Be Streamed, and It Could Strengthen or Shatter Your Relationship.

Here's a test for those in enduring partnerships who enjoy horror films: Settle in with your significant other and watch Together. This critically acclaimed 2025 movie recently had its streaming debut on Hulu. On the surface, it may seem like typical biological terror, but within Together exists a profound examination about the ways we decide to love each other.

A Directorial Debut Exploring Relationship Dynamics

Together represents the debut feature-length film for filmmaker Michael Shanks. It stars the real-life married couple Dave Franco and Alison Brie as Millie and Tim, an unmarried couple that have stayed together for a decade. Having wed in real life in 2017, Franco and Brie infuse a particular energy to their roles, masterfully depicting both the joys and frustrations of a long-term relationship.

The story begins when Tim and Millie transition from the big city to the countryside for Millie’s job. A familiar narrative setup, of course, but that’s mostly where the conventions conclude. Together evolves into as much a deep dive into the psyche of the partnership as it is a film about physical terror.

An Otherworldly Trigger

While trekking near their new home, a storm hits, and the two tumble into an subterranean cavern. After a night spent there and eventually escaping, a supernatural entity takes hold of the pair. This force induces a supernatural closeness between them that goes far beyond typical partnership.

The entire film is a methodically building horror experience, interspersing moments of dreamlike terrors, disturbing (but not excessively graphic) physical transformations, and genuinely funny dialogue (sometimes during something horrific). Shanks weaves these elements together expertly and delivers them in a gradually swelling sense of impending doom.

Complex Characterizations

A significant portion of Together is exclusively the two lead actors, and they masterfully render numerous complexities to the dynamic between Tim and Millie. Millie's sense of self and emotional bond is deteriorating due to a distance. Her subconscious resentment of Tim for his unwillingness to chase only his floundering music career slowly bubbles to the surface.

Tim, on the other hand senses confinement and separated by Millie, who’s the cause they’ve relocated rural and far away from his network of friends. He is terrified of the concept of completely losing his personal autonomy in another person. This fear is further exacerbated by the fact he does not operate a vehicle and relies on Millie for getting around.

The film's most intelligent aspect in this movie avoids making Tim or Millie the obvious villain.

The couple face the kind of problems that are inherent in any relationship over a long period. Deep down, they have affection for one another. They still laugh together, comfort one another, and open up at times. But below this facade, there’s an unavoidable feeling of questioning about their bond.

Allegory and Meaning

While the paranormal elements in Together symbolize these anxieties of unhealthy attachment and totally devoting oneself to another person, the symbolism never feels hamfisted or pretentious. Instead, these ickier, creepier moments provide a ideal counterpart to the character-driven drama. Both the frights and the fights work together in harmony.

A Divisive Ending

Together’s final act, which won’t be spoiled here, has created disagreement on the film’s ultimate message about codependent relationships. Accounts suggest that single viewers have interpreted the film as a powerful case for remaining unattached. On the other hand, some couples experiencing tension found that the film ultimately assisted them make up.

If you are alone or with a partner, your own response could function as a great barometer of how you view relationships. Will the conclusion sow feelings of uneasiness and dread, or a uplifting feeling of optimism? Will you recognize your own traits in either protagonist and yell at the screen, or simply turn to your significant other and say, “I’d do that for you”?

Regardless of the outcome, Together is an experiment you can embark on today.

Together is available to watch on Hulu's platform now.
