Wimbledon Embraces Video Review System in 2025.

The Championships tennis court with video review system

The tournament joins the American and Aussie Opens in implementing replay technology.

Video review technology are set to arrive at The Championships for the 2025 edition.

Players are granted the right to challenge certain decisions from the official, following the practice already in operation at both the American Grand Slam and the Aussie major.

This technology will be operational on Centre Court and Court One throughout the Championships and on the other four featured courts when they are hosting singles contests.

This development arrives only a season following the All England Club rolled out ELC, which effectively ended the longstanding role of line judges.

What Can Be Reviewed?

Competitors will not be permitted to dispute the call of the electronic line calling, but they can request the umpire to re-examine specific decisions, such as:

  • If a tennis ball has double-bounced.
  • Whether a ball touched an rival's racket or body on the way past.
  • Possible interference end of a point.

Importantly, there is an unlimited number on the number of challenges a player can ask for.

Case in Point

An illustrative case occurred in a recent tournament last week, where Daniil Medvedev used the video challenge against Jack Draper.

The British player admitted it was a tough call for the umpire, but thought his rival had "used the regulations effectively."

The umpire watched a video and determined Draper was guilty of interference, granting the rally to Medvedev.

Growing Trend

This technology aren't exclusive to Grand Slams. It has been in use at the US Open for two years and the Australian Open this year.

Furthermore, it is increasingly prevalent on the WTA circuit, and by the coming year the ATP circuit plans to have the system implemented at all of its events.

Further Updates

A further innovation at Wimbledon this year involves the introduction of visual indicators on scoreboards to support the verbal announcements from the electronic line calling system.

This solves situations where fans have sometimes been uncertain if a ball was out or in.

Finally, with exactly a century of days remaining until the beginning of the tournament, the AELTC have also revealed an increase in daily attendance at the qualifiers in the qualifying venue.
